Ellie's Story

A mule. My mule, rescued last Halloween. An animal known for its stubbornness and a holiday founded on fright, so perhaps no better way to make this grand announcement, at long last…. Why? Because I have stubbornly resisted taking this step for well over 20 years. And because asking for help truly scares me.

But I am, finally, asking for help. And I will, over and over again from now on. Because I can do even more for amazing animals like Ellie. That is, I can do more with your help.

And that trumps any fears I may have.

In a lot of ways, fear ruled Ellie, too. But she was an anomaly in animal rescue in a lot of ways: She was well fed, and she was loved. But—due to fear of his own—her owner hadn’t laid a hand on her in over 8 years.

And so her ancient, too-small halter remained on her head for far too long, cutting into her face and sorely limiting her jaw movement. And Ellie’s mistrust of human touch only grew over the years, punctuated by the physical pain she was no doubt feeling.

I knew, when I agreed to take Ellie and her Haflinger sister, it would be a very, very slow and long road to starting to gain her trust. And to finally being able to free her of what had been restricting her.

At this point, I honestly don’t feel I could understand Ellie anymore.

After several months of daily, painstakingly small steps—usually several times each day—last week, I was finally able to remove Ellie’s old halter. And bequeath this astoundingly intelligent, resilient, and hardy girl with a new, better fitting one. My reward? She laid her head on my chest as she comfortably chewed the grain I held before her in her feed pan.

I can tell you there is no better feeling than that.

So with that, please be advised that it’s finally official: Ellie’s forever home, Dream Big at Moseley Manor, is a certified 501(c)(3) organization. A real nonprofit, a sanctuary dedicated to being a safe haven for animals once unwanted, abandoned, discarded, abused, injured, or forgotten.

If you love animals and want to support what I do, please make a tax-deductible donation in one of the following always. I can assure you it will be put to good use.

Because animals are so worth it. They’re important. Thank you.
